I totally agree, heat sucks. A lot. I'm cranky, irritable, bitchy, and I don't even have PMS.

Seems that all childhood summers have one universal thing in common: They are remembered fondly. I remember not being able to wait until we went to the beach, without sunscreen, without extra baggage. Felt great.

Ever since I became a mom, I've had to tote a humongous bag with anything from varying SPF lotions to cold water to bee sting gel ..."just in case". I'm pretty sure my mom carried those things with her back then too... I seem to recall only the carefree ambience. Now, a day at the beach is "work" and I can't wait to get back home and hug my shower.

It wasn't that hot back then, by the way, it's not your imagination... the planet's temperature has risen. And OH. my favourite shampoo was "Gee your hair smells terrific".

You just my childhood summer days. :o) My sister was and my best friend's sister were lifeguards at our town pool so we got to swim between afternoon and evening swim. It was great and we felt just that little bit special while all the other town kids were watching us on the other side of the fence.

Eventually you'll come to comfortable place with your mom again. It's not that she'll change, or that you'll change, but that you'll both be able to live with what you don't understand or like about each other and focus on all that you have in common--even if that's just a fondness for network TV and Orange Crush.

I'm a little choked up here on this post, the memories. The bittersweet days of our youth.

I love the way you made it so descriptive; it brought me into the story so easily.
